Pioneers & Explorers : The World Itinerary

bullet

Take Attendance (Monitor can do this as children enter)

bullet

Watch Movie 1:30 - 2:00

bullet

Break kids into small groups
bullet

a minimum of small mostly even groups

bullet

optimum would be 4-5 kids / group

bullet

Choose 1 group of kids, who haven't gone, to go into the library with an adult and a teen to do library research   2:00 - 2:30
bullet

Monitor should put an "X" through today's attendance circle as children exit so we can track which children have had library skills in which month.

bullet

Teach children to use computer catalog - DO NOT DO IT FOR THEM!

bullet

Teach children options in computer catalog

bullet

Have them copy book title, author & call number for any books the library has.

bullet

Help them look up the books - DO NOT DO THIS FOR THEM!

bullet

Help them consider other sources of information - encyclopedias, atlases, magazines...  Encourage them to find a few Primary Sources (historical documents written in that country about that country) and items on different reading levels.

bullet

When kids have selected 20-50 pieces of material and filled out hold slips, they can return to the Main room, each joining a different small group.

bullet

Adult assigned to library research group ensures slips are given to the next adult on the schedule for the following month's Travel Club

bullet

Assign each group a topic to research  2:00 - 2:30
bullet

If there are too few kids to cover all topics, assign less topics - or the kids can do double topics if they get through quickly

bullet

Hand out topic sheets

bullet

Groups select books from stack, take to table & return books to stack for others to use before getting another book or when done

bullet

Adults assisting any group with trouble

bullet

After a reasonable amount of time, bring the group back together as a whole & each group reports to the larger group with each child taking notes. 2:30 - 2:45
bullet

Don't forget about the group doing library research!

bullet

Adults should help smaller children take notes.  They don't need every piece of information given.

bullet

Children spend the last 30 minutes or so filling out their Travel Log of what they've learned 2:45 - 3:15
bullet

If a child forgets to bring their Travel Log, supply them with blank paper to scrapbook on.

bullet

Pass out the appropriate blackline map
bullet
