Science Co-op I'm not lazy -- well, sometimes. I do, however, struggle to motivate myself at times. I told you my horrible secret that even my kids don't know on the Science Page of this site. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't like science - REALLY. You can click on the Science Page link to read more. THIS was MY SOLUTION. Quit doing it. Since, that wasn't a reasonable solution, I came up with another. Only do it half of the time. Not wanting to compromise my kids' education due to my failings, I found another schmuck er mom to do it the other half. Enter my friend Patrice. (Aren't you glad you're not a good friend of mine or I'd smear your name all over my website, too.) My wonderful friend, Patrice, offered to be my guinea pig. She'd do a science co-op with me. I'd seen other science co-ops and had decided that while they did cool stuff with the kids, they were more pressure on me than I was up for (considering it was my least favorite subject.) So, early on, we decided that Patrice would bring her family to my house (since she already knew that I didn't clean much and it was easier than worrying if my boys would trash her house). The first year, she came once a month and we had coffee together while the kids played for, ideally, 30 minutes. When we finally tore ourselves away from our chatty friendship, one or the other (I usually preferred her, but I'd do it if it was my turn) would present the science concept. Usually, I'd had my kids read the chapter or section beforehand. Usually, Patrice would have her family read it after Science Co-op (see what I mean about low-pressure). Whoever was in charge of Science for the day, presented the concept, gathered the supplies, executed the experiment, and had the kids do the write-up. Then we'd fix lunch while the kids did their write-up. After lunch the other adult would present an art project of their choosing (and they had to bring the supplies). That was it. Easy, fun, and I only had to "do science" half as much as I had been. At the end of the year, we added another family to our mix and decided we'd meet 2x/month the following year. It works wonderful for us. Here's my Biology Page and my Physics Plan. It's the schedule we go by for our Science Co-op. |
