Home School Considerations

There are numerous benefits and considerations to take into account when deciding to home school your child. Home school allows families to spend more time together day to day. Students can explore a whole range of freedom that they normally could not experience in a typical classroom setting. The child in a home school program doesn’t experience the same kind of pressure that their counterparts in formal institutions experience. In addition, a lot of home school families seem to have a sense of unity and a family bond that could possibly be interrupted if the children participated in an education outside of the home.

There are many reasons that a family may decide to home school their children. Usually, these reasons can be broken down into four major categories: 1) religious reasons, 2) social reasons, 3) family reasons, and 4) academic reasons.

Home School Considerations: Religious Reasons

Since the separation of church and state, many families have chosen to home school their children to ensure that the child receives an education in their religious backgrounds. Parents want to support their child’s spiritual growth. Many parents want to incorporate their religious beliefs in their children and want their children to understand how important a religious system is to their personal development and character.

Home School Considerations: Social Reasons

One of the reasons parents choose to home school is due to social reasons. Of course, there is a variety of social reasons that parents take into consideration. First, they feel as if there is less of a chance that the student will give into peer pressure. A lot of parents will get their home school kids involved in the community by volunteering, or going to Church. There are also a lot of different community coordinated programs. Community programs such as this are beneficial due to the fact that it introduces the students to a variety of people and situations.

Some more social benefits that stem from home schools is that a child’s attention is not focused on things that can harm them, like premarital sex, violence, alcohol, drugs and other activities that may have a detrimental effect on their life.

As a result of the many benefits that children get from the home school experience, they are able to function more appropriately and express more respect towards people in their community and families.

Home School Considerations: Family Reasons

Many families choose to home school so that the bond that they share will grow stronger. When parents support their children, it opens up a line of trust and communication that may not be otherwise shared. Based on a statistical study, families who home school produce more confident, loving and emotionally sound kids.

Home School Considerations: Academic Reasons

In a home school environment, children receive more personal, one on one focus. Children can strengthen their weaknesses, take pride in their accomplishments and enjoy a curriculum that is specified and tailored to their personal needs. The subjects are actually taught as an individual course and not cross disciplined as in the classroom. Children may also experience more enriching educational experiences by being in a home school program.
