All
narrations are directly from Matthew 1 : 1-17, 20-23 and Luke 2:1-20.
The action revolves around the story being told by the narrator.
You can use 1 dedicated narrator if you don't have many kids or each
child can break out of the character they're playing to take a narrator
verse. This script lends itself nicely to few or lots of kids.
You can have 'flocks' of sheep hanging out with the shepherds or
"multitudes" of angels. You can have a star following
the Holy Family and animals hanging out in the manger.
(All children sing all songs
regardless of which part they’re playing.
“Stage” will be in OLGH basement under the overhang with
audience sitting in the gym facing overhang.
Shepherds’ spot is on stage right (by stairs) in a rough
diagonal line facing center stage.
Angels’ spot on stage left (nearest kitchen) in straight
diagonal rows facing center stage. Star begins behind angels and once
Baby Jesus is born, star follows manger on stage.
Mary & Joseph stand back by backdrop center stage.
Narrator spot is between audience & children, stage right-by
stairs. )
(As audience enters, children
with musical ability play Christmas songs on violin or piano.)
O
Come, O Come Emmanuel
O
come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
(Shepherds
standing in 2 straight columns facing audience hand-off babydoll
back and forth as they say who begot whom. Joseph & Mary are at the
end of the columns. After
they’re done in pairs, they go back to shepherd spot.)

forth)

Of the Father’s love
begotten, ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!
He is found in human
fashion, death and sorrow here to know,
That the race of Adam’s children doomed by law to endless woe,
May not henceforth die and perish
In the dreadful gulf below, evermore and evermore!
This is He Whom seers in
old time chanted of with one accord;
Whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word;
Now He shines, the long expected,
Let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore!
(Matthew
1:20-23 Narrator walks to spot, Joseph lays down asleep front center
stage with his hands folded under his head like a pillow.
Angel walks up to him)
(Narrator
speaks)
An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a
dream and said,
(Narrator
speaks)
"Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your
wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will
give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he
will save his people from their sins." (Angel walks back to
place. Joseph wakes up and
walks back to Mary.)
(Narrator
speaks)
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the
prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a
son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with
us." (walks back to spot)
O
Come, O Come Emmanuel
Veni,
Clavis Davidica,
Regna reclude caelica,
Fac iter tutum superum,
Et claude vias inferum.
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
(Luke
2:1-5 Narrator
speaks) In those days Caesar Augustus issued a
decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. This was
the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up
from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of
David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there
to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was
expecting a child. (Mary & Joseph journey
through audience during song.)
Oh
Little Town of Bethlehem
O
little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee to-night.
(Luke
2:6-7 Mary & Joseph end journey at the Manger and Mary picks up
Jesus out of manger)
(Narrator
walks to narrator spot & speaks)
While
they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave
birth to her firstborn, a son. She
wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no
room for them in the inn. (go back to spot
behind where manger Is – Star follows manger throughout play)
Silent Night
(vs.1 & 3)
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth "
(After song has ended, Mary
carries baby Jesus back to Mary & Joseph’s original spot behind
action of angel/shepherds and Joseph carries manger.
They quietly settle in front of the back drop center stage.)
(Luke 2:8-14)
(Narrator
walks to narrator spot & speaks) And there were shepherds living
out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. (Angels
are all grouped together & shepherds fall on their faces)An
angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them,
(Angel
steps out from angels & speaks)
"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be
for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to
you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a
baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
(Narrator
speaks) Suddenly
a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising
God and saying,
(All
angels speak)
"Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor
rests."
Hark the Herald
Angels Sing
(vs.
1 & refrain sung between angels “angel part” & rest of
children – vs. 2 & 3 all children)
Hark
the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail
the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
(Luke
2:15)
(Narrator
walks to narrator spot & speaks)
When
the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another
(Shepherd
speaking to fellow shepherds)
"Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which
the Lord has told us about." ( all shepherds hurry through
audience while angels help Mary and Joseph move to front center stage.)
(Narrator
speaks) So
they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying
in the manger. When
they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told
them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the
shepherds said to them. (walks back to spot)
(Luke
2:16-18 shepherds walk to manger at front center stage standing behind
Holy Family.)
Angels We Have Heard On High
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
(Luke
2:19 Mary plays with baby Jesus)
(Narrator
speaks)
But
Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
